Which Presidential Candidate Will Use Facebook Ads the Most Effectively in the Upcoming Elections?

One of my mentors, Perry Marshall, told a great story about an underdog candidate running for mayor who unseated the incumbent candidate solely by the use of a well strategized, stealth Facebook ads campaign.  At the fraction of what a typical candidate would spend on a normal multimedia campaign.

Keep in mind this candidate was virtually an unknown before this election; he was young and had little experience compared to the incumbent mayor.   And this was a fairly large city budget they were competing for.  But he had one secret weapon:  he had a member on his campaign team who was schooled in Facebook advertising. And more importantly:  at using hyper-targeting strategies with his Facebook ads.

How did he do it?

 

He created tons of different Facebook ads targeting different groups of people, organizations, cultures, ethnic groups, etc.  They even created an ad written in the native language of a local Native American population.  The ad wrote: “We hear you.” – and written in their language!  It was probably the first ad of any kind they had ever seen in their own language.   They created ads targeted local churches, organizations, even an ad targeting only kids who were exactly 18 years old, that told them they are now 18 and at the legal age to vote.   Of course they created ads targeting people in their political party, but those are the obvious ads.

Facebook advertising can be a gold mine when you learn to target effectively.

The best part of this story is that the competing candidate had virtually no idea he was running these ads.  You see, hardly any of the target audience that would normally vote for his competitor, or any of the people on his campaign team, even saw these ads!
